Asbestos air testing questions

Can an air quality test detect asbestos?

The only way to know if asbestos is present in your home is to have suspect materials tested or have an asbestos air quality test performed. Must I have any asbestos I find removed? No. Asbestos is only a danger if the asbestos fibers become airborne.

How is asbestos in the air measured?

Measured volume of air through a membrane filter which is subsequently rendered transparent and mounted on a microscope slide. The fibres collected in the sample are then counted under a phase contrast microscope to evaluate the asbestos fibre concentration in the air.

How long does asbestos stay in the air?

You have to be more careful while working with asbestos. Asbestos fibers are light and because of their shape, they can remain airborne as long as 48 to 72 hours. Asbestos exist in the ambient air we breathe, instead, the problem occurs from exposure to high concentration of fibers when they are disturbed.
